(Denver) – State Rep. Rhonda Fields has vaulted onto 5280 magazine’s annual list of the 50 most powerful Coloradans.
Rep. Fields, ranked 37th, and state Sen. Michael Johnston, 30th, are the only state legislators on the magazine’s list, published in its December edition.
Rep. Fields (D-Aurora) has only been in office one year. She became a witness protection and victims’ rights advocate after her son, Javad, and his fiancée were murdered in 2005, just before Javad was to testify in a murder trial. Spurred by that tragedy, she helped pass a witness protection act, then ran successfully for House District 42 in 2010. This year, the Colorado Democratic Party named her its “Rising Star.”
“While Fields is just starting her second year, she’s gained the type of respect that politicians dream about,” 5280 said.
“I’m sure there are others more deserving than I am,” Rep. Fields said. “But I appreciate any accolade if it can help me influence legislation to make life better for the people of my district and the state of Colorado.”
