(June 20) – Alliance Colorado, an advocacy group for people with developmental disabilities, presented its Legislator of the Year Award today to Rep. Dave Young (D-Greeley).
The Alliance award is given to legislators who go above and beyond in their commitment to Coloradans with developmental disabilities and the community providers serving their needs. Rep. Young sponsored resolutions in 2012 and 2013 calling for a redesign of the state’s long-term services and supports system for the developmentally disabled.
“The issue of services and supports for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities is why I am a legislator,” Rep. Young explained at the Alliance’s awards luncheon today in Breckenridge. “My sister is dually diagnosed with complex mental health issues as well as living with developmental disabilities. She is also medically fragile, having had a liver transplant several years ago. When things get a bit dicey in the legislature, I think about all of the challenges my sister valiantly faces and works through every day. It really puts things in perspective.”
“The work Alliance is doing to help redesign our system of long-term services and supports is important and appreciated,” Rep. Young told the group. “I accept this award because I stand willing to tackle the difficult issues and work to make sure we provide the best system to support those who we are dedicated to serve.”
