(Oct. 11) – Reps. Leroy Garcia and Tim Dore are winners of Action 22’s 2013 awards for outstanding public service.

Reps. Garcia (D-Pueblo) and Dore (R-Elizabeth) cooperated to win legislative passage this year of a bill to convert Fort Lyon, a mothballed minimum-security correctional facility in Las Animas, into a full-service treatment and rehabilitation center for homeless people in Colorado.

“I appreciate the recognition,” Rep. Garcia said. “Tim and I were glad to be able to help many members of our chronic homeless population, which includes a high percentage of veterans, while creating an economic driver for the Lower Arkansas Valley.”

Announcement of the awards was timed to coincide with Action 22’s annual conference, taking place this year in Colorado Springs. Action 22 represents 22 southeastern and southern Colorado counties.
