(March 25) – A simple solution to improve hospital care for Coloradans who depend on caregivers won overwhelming House approval this morning.
HB15-1242, sponsored by Rep. Jessie Danielson, D-Wheat Ridge, would allow patients to check in to a hospital with a caregiver, who would remain with the patient during the hospital stay and be present during the discharge instructions, where the patient is given information about what must be done following the hospital stay.
Discharge instructions have a history of being misunderstood in the healthcare world. When the caregiver is better informed, at-home care improves and the patient is less likely to be readmitted to the hospital, saving time, money and lives.
“This bill will result in better at-home care for patients and will give families and caregivers the support they need in what are often difficult times,” Rep. Danielson said.
The House’s 60-3 vote sends the bill to the Senate.
