(April 29) – The House gave preliminary approval this morning to Rep. Beth McCann’s bill to increase awareness and prevention of sexual abuse in K-12 schools.

SB15-020, sponsored in the House by Rep. McCann, D-Denver, expands the state School Safety Resource Center’s duties to include providing materials and training to school personnel, parents and students to prevent child sexual abuse and assault. The bill also encourages schools to adopt a child sexual abuse and assault prevention plan and includes sexual assault prevention in the professional development training required for teacher license renewals.

“This bill will help our schools have educational materials regarding child sex assault and sexual abuse and help in identifying such abuse,” Rep. McCann told the House before its voice-vote approval.

Next: a recorded vote before the bill goes to Gov. John Hickenlooper for signature.
