(Aug. 7) – Rep. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, issued a statement this evening after the jury in the Aurora theater trial sentenced the defendant, James Holmes, to life in prison without parole.
“Today’s sentence is the culmination of three years of hard work by law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates and many others, all of whom deserve our thanks,” Rep. Fields said.
“I also thank the jurors in this case. Our system leaves the ultimate decision of life or death to 12 citizens who had the heavy responsibility of defining justice on behalf of the people of Colorado. They did their jobs with integrity and honor and we should all respect their decision.
“Our thoughts right now should be with the victims and their families. The jurors have spoken and James Holmes will never get out of prison. Let the families of his victims begin to heal. Let us all begin to heal.”
The 2012 shooting, which left 12 dead and 70 wounded, took place in Rep. Fields’s district.
