(Nov. 18) – Rep. Joe Salazar, D-Thornton, is a recipient of a 2015 Civil Rights Award presented to “individuals and organizations dedicated to serving today’s civil rights movement” by the NEWSED Community Development Corporation, which has been an advocate for revitalization and economic development in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Denver for more than four decades.

“It’s an honor to receive this award. My whole purpose is to serve people and to ensure that their civil rights are protected,” said Rep. Salazar, who was a sponsor of several bills in 2015 to defend Coloradans’ civil rights during encounters with the police and to rebuild trust between Colorado law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

The awards were presented Tuesday night at NEWSED’s gala at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
