(Feb. 9) – A bipartisan measure by Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, D-Arvada, and Rep. Lois Landgraf, R-Colorado Springs, to clarify pathways to licensure for mental health professionals passed the House Public Health Care and Human Services committee 13-0 this afternoon.
“This is a workforce bill and helps streamline the pathway to a mental health career,” said Rep. Kraft-Tharp. “This is needed to speed up the process for college graduates to enter the workforce.”
Currently, unclear statutory language unintentionally diverts students away from their correct pathway to licensure and creates unnecessary financial burden. HB16-1103 cleans up the statutory language and clarifies the guidelines for recent graduates.
The passage of HB16-1103 would strengthen the mental health workforce by as many as 4,000 licensed professionals according to the National Association of Social Workers.
Improving mental health access has been a policy priority in recent years as tragic incidents have put the need in the spotlight. This bill supports the professionals who are seeking to dedicate their careers to improving mental health.
