(April 14) – A longstanding champion for veterans in Colorado, Rep. Su Ryden, D-Aurora, accomplished a goal several years in the making this morning with the passage of her bill to complete the development of the Fitzsimons State Veterans Nursing Home and Community Living Center on the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. The bill passed out of the House with a 64-1 vote.
“This bill lives up to the original plan for the center to provide a full range of services for those who have served our country,” said Rep. Ryden. “I’m so proud that this legislation will provide a better future for those who so deserve it. Our veterans should not have to keep fighting for the benefits they have earned.”
HB16-1397 directs the Department of Human Services to lead the planning, design, completion, and operation of the additional facilities.
Colorado is home to 413,000 veterans, according to 2014 data from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Under the bill, the Fitzsimons State Veterans Community Living Center will provide a continuum of care for veterans and their families.
The vote sends the bill to the Senate for consideration.
