(June 1) – Gov. John Hickenlooper gave the final seal of approval to a bill by Rep. Su Ryden, D-Aurora, to complete the development of the Fitzsimons State Veterans Nursing Home and Community Living Center on the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. A longstanding champion for veterans in Colorado, Rep. Ryden said the new law was the result of several years of hard work to expand the continuum of care for veterans in her community.

“This law lives up to the original plan for Fitzsimons to provide a full range of services for our veterans who have served our country and community,” said Rep. Ryden. “I’m proud that this legislation will provide a better future for those who so deserve it. Our veterans should not have to keep fighting for the benefits they have earned.”

HB16-1397 directs the Department of Human Services to lead the planning, design, completion, and operation of the additional facilities.

Colorado is home to 413,000 veterans, according to 2014 data from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
