(April 24) – Rep. Donald Valdez’s bipartisan bill to tighten penalties for theft of firearms won the House’s preliminary OK tonight.
HB18-1077, sponsored by Reps. Valdez, D-La Jara, and Larry Liston, R-Colorado Springs, raises the penalty for stealing firearms or ammunition from a Class 4 felony to a Class 3, matching the penalty for stealing controlled substances.
Stolen guns are far more likely to be used in crimes, and the black market has been boosted recently by a series of smash-and-grab burglaries at gun shops in Colorado.
“This is a good, common-sense public safety bill that keeps guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous criminals,” Rep. Valdez said after the House voice vote in favor of the bill.
After a recorded vote, HB18-1077 will go to the Senate.
