(June 28) – The editors of 5280 magazine have named Rep. Leroy Garcia (D-Pueblo) the “top rookie politician” in the magazine’s annual Top of the Town awards.
“Garcia proved to his constituents that he could fight, a skill that helped him push through legislation for emergency medical service providers and small businesses,” the citation reads. “Most notably, he’s worked hard to convert former correctional facility Fort Lyon into a transitional housing facility for the homeless and veterans. We may not agree with him on everything, but we have to appreciate his work ethic.”
“I appreciate the recognition, but I’m not sure about the ‘rookie politician’ label,” Rep. Garcia said with a laugh. “Folks in Pueblo know I’ve been working for them for several years.”
Rep. Garcia was a member of the Pueblo City Council from 2009 until he was elected to the state legislature in November 2012.
