Duran-Bridges Bill to Advance Students & Colleges Signed by Hickenlooper

(May 16) – Gov. John Hickenlooper signed Speaker Crisanta Duran and Rep. Jeff Bridges’ bill today to provide supplemental grants to public colleges and universities across Colorado.

The governor signed SB18-262, sponsored by Speaker Duran, D-Denver, and Rep. Bridges, D-Greenwood Village to distribute $16.7 million to public colleges and universities in Colorado. Speaker Duran and Rep. Bridges amended the bill in the House to reduce appropriations to the University of Colorado and Colorado State University systems to give a larger slice of the pie to regional colleges and universities and the community college system. The amendments also added $1.6 million for need-based grants and $1.5 million for the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative.

“Our economy is growing and evolving. Our state must build many pathways for our students to succeed and reach their full potential, whether it’s a four-year degree, a certificate program, or workforce training,” Speaker Duran said.

“Within the next few years the vast majority of jobs here in Colorado will require some education beyond high school,” said Representative Jeff Bridges. “Today’s investment will make higher education degrees and certificates affordable and accessible, giving more hard-working Coloradans the opportunity to earn a good life.”
