GOP Blocks Funding for CO Civil Rights Division

(Feb. 8) – Republicans on the legislative Joint Budget Committee blocked funding this afternoon to the Colorado Civil Rights Division, which investigates claims of discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on race, gender, disability, sexual orientation and other factors.

“The GOP JBC members are undermining key protections for Coloradans against discrimination,” said Speaker Crisanta Duran. “The CCRD is up for sunset review this year, and pre-emptively trying to defund it is an outrageous move.”

“Without this funding, the Civil Rights Division will cease to exist on July 1, which would put the civil rights of Coloradans at risk,” said Rep. Millie Hamner, D-Dillon, chairwoman of the JBC. “The CCRD plays a key role in Colorado by fielding and helping to resolve hundreds of complaints every year.”

“Sunset reviews are the proper forum for discussion of issues regarding an agency or program,” said Rep. Dave Young, D-Greeley, who also sits on the JBC. “But without funding, the sunset review for the CCRD will be moot.”
