House Dems Encouraged by Governor’s Priorities

(Jan 14) – Speaker of the House Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Boulder, Majority Leader Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, and the chairwoman of the Joint Budget Committee, Rep. Millie Hamner, D-Dillon, all agreed that Gov. John Hickenlooper highlighted the most important issues facing Colorado in his State of the State address this morning. The governor highlighted several priorities that will keep Colorado moving forward: improving transportation infrastructure, expanding broadband access, addressing education, creating affordable housing, job creation, and our state’s budget.

“We have a responsibility to the people of Colorado to preserve and enhance the Colorado way of life, and right now that means finding solutions to our budget crisis,” said Speaker Hullinghorst. “We have a viable, constitutional solution on the table that will prevent millions in budget cuts without raising taxes—fixing the hospital provider fee.”

“The governor was right to point out that virtually every chamber of commerce and editorial board in this state agree that fixing the hospital provider fee makes sense,” Hullinghorst continued. “The governor’s usual optimism and hopefulness came across this morning, and I believe we will get it done for the people of Colorado.”

“Two things particularly stuck out to me: the Governor’s emphasis on cooperation and on job creation,” Majority Leader Duran said. “Last year we passed the incredibly successful bipartisan Colorado Ready to Work package, so I know that collaboration will continue this session to create more jobs and help the economic recovery reach all corners of Colorado.”

“I was encouraged by the uplifting tone of the Governor’s speech, because I know we can get this done,” said Rep. Hamner. “We in the JBC have already been working for months to create a budget that works for Colorado. We will have to collaborate to create a real solution that brings the resources needed for our schools and roads.”
