House Dems Join ‘Day Without a Woman’ Observances

(March 8) – Democratic women legislators stayed off the floor during roll call this morning in observance of International Women’s Day and the global “Day Without a Woman” demonstrations.

“Women’s daily contributions to our society are under-recognized and under-appreciated,” Rep. Daneya Esgar, D-Pueblo, said on behalf of the Democratic women’s caucus, which includes 19 of Colorado’s 37 Democratic state representatives. “We know not every woman in Colorado can afford to strike today, and we stand in solidarity with them.”

The legislators did not disrupt the House calendar, returning to the floor in time for consideration of the day’s schedule, beginning with a bipartisan resolution urging companies to appoint more women to their corporate boards.

“We encourage inclusiveness not only because it is the right thing to do, but because you get better results when everyone has a seat at the table,” said Speaker Crisanta Duran, who sponsored HJR17-1017 with Rep. Lois Landgraf, R-Fountain.
