House Dems Pass ‘Conversion Therapy’ Ban

(April 5) – A bill by Reps. Paul Rosenthal and Dafna Michaelson Jenet to ban so-called “conversion therapy” on minors passed the House today.

“Conversion therapy” is a dangerous and discredited practice aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation or suppressing a person’s gender identity. The practice has been shown to increase the risk of drug and alcohol abuse, depression and suicide and has been rejected by every mainstream mental health professional association.

HB18-1245 prohibits licensed or registered mental health professionals from attempting “conversion therapy” on patients under 18 years of age.

“This is the fourth time I’m proposing this bill – I’m hopeful the Senate will act this year to protect our LGBTQ youth from this harmful practice,” said Rep. Rosenthal, D-Denver.

“We should be loving our children for who they are, not trying to turn them into someone they aren’t,” said Rep. Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City.

Of 27 Republicans present, only one voted to join the united Democratic caucus in the 36-26 vote in favor of HB18-1245, which goes now to the state Senate.
