House Expands Tuition Break for American Indians

(April 27) – The House gave final approval today to Rep. Joe Salazar’s bill to grant in-state college tuition rates to American Indian students from the 48 tribes with historical ties to the land that is now Colorado.

HB15-1027 applies to all state institutions of higher education except Fort Lewis College in Durango, which already provides free tuition to American Indians.

“We have really done nothing to move these Americans, our Americans, forward with the rest of the nation,” Rep. Salazar, D-Thornton, told the House this morning. “House Bill 1027 serves as a very small part in healing the spirit, the very wounded spirit, of our state and nation.”

The House’s 34-30 vote sends HB15-1027 to the Senate.
