House Expands Tuition Break for American Indians

(April 23) – The House gave voice-vote approval today to Rep. Joe Salazar’s bill to grant in-state college tuition rates to American Indian students from the 48 tribes with historical ties to the land that is now Colorado.

HB15-1027 applies to all state institutions of higher education except Fort Lewis College in Durango, which already provides free tuition to American Indians.

“Those who were here first are among the last to receive educational opportunities,” said Rep. Salazar, D-Thornton. “This is a small measure to rectify that disparity and acknowledge the special debt we owe them.”
