Longmont Flood Responders Recognized on Opening Day

(Jan. 8) – In his speech today opening the 2014 session of the House of Representatives,  Speaker Mark Ferrandino (D-Denver) recognized Longmont citizens for their actions during the September flood.

Pastor Dan Scates of Lifebridge Christian Church responded to the flood by opening his church as an evacuation center and staging site throughout the flood and recovery. During the first nine days LBCC acted as an evacuation center for three counties. Hundreds of LBCC members provided more than 10,000 meals to evacuees and first responders and 1,300 nights of shelter to evacuees.

“Pastor Scates and the entire LBCC congregation were instrumental in providing immediate assistance during the flood,” Rep. Jonathan Singer (D-Longmont) said. “Lifebridge Christian Church lived up to its name during the flood and recovery and really was a life bridge for displaced and homeless residents.”

Capt. Chad Rademacher and members of the Longmont Mountain View Fire Rescue and Lt. Mike Becker and member of the Longmont Fire Department were also recognized. Capt. Rademacher, Sean Tallman, Jamie Wood, Steve Knoll as well as Lt. Mike Becker and his crew of the Longmont Fire Department were all part of a team of first responders that rescued Erin Brazzil from drowning after her car had become trapped and filled with water on Sept. 12.

“Capt. Rademacher’s actions helped save Erin’s life that day,” Rep. Mike Foote (D-Lafayette) said. “Without the reactions of first responders like Capt. Rademacher’s and Lt. Becker’s crew the loss of human life could have been much worse. Their actions throughout the floods were heroic.”

Director of Public Works and Natural Resources, Dale Rademacher, was highlighted for his efforts in leading the City of Longmont’s response in emergency operations and recovery efforts during and after the floods.

“Dale’s hard work is just one example of how the Longmont city government has responded so well in the face of this disaster,” Rep. Foote said.

Speaker Ferrandino emphasized that bills designed to assist with flood recovery and prevention will be the first taken up this legislative session.
