Love Wins Again

(June 8) – A bill by Rep. Daneya Esgar that modernizes state statute and provides clarity in the laws surrounding civil unions was signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper this afternoon.

“Now that marriage equality is officially the law of the land, Coloradan couples who have made the decision to spend the rest of their lives together deserve a fair process to move from a civil union to a marriage,” said Rep. Esgar, D-Pueblo. “This law modernizes our statutes so that love between two people is recognized the way it should be.”

SB16-150 amends state law to allow couples in a civil union to marry each other without having to first dissolve the civil union, a confusing and costly process. The bill specifies that time spent in a civil union prior to a marriage is included when determining the duration of the marriage for divorce proceedings. The bill also repeals the section of statute that declares marriages between two people of the same sex from other states are recognized as civil unions in Colorado.
