Jovan Melton is in his fourth term representing House District 41, which covers southwest Aurora and parts of unincorporated Arapahoe County. He serves on the State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee.
Rep. Melton’s main focus has been criminal justice reform. In 2017 he sponsored a new law allowing courts to seal the records of people convicted of marijuana offenses that are no longer illegal, since Amendment 64 passed in 2012. He also passed a new law increasing penalties for texting while driving. His 2016 session highlight was his sponsorship of a new law banning the use of chokeholds by law enforcement.
He also worked to ease the transition for veterans returning to the civilian workforce and helped more law enforcement officers and firefighters to earn the retirement they deserve.
Rep. Melton is a Colorado native and grew up in Aurora and Denver. After graduating from CU with a B.A. in political science, Melton began a career in government and government relations. He has worked for Comcast Communications, on campaigns, and in Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien’s office on the Governor’s Commission on Community Service, a position where he could help shape state policy to make a difference for working families.
