Rep. Sonya Jaquez Lewis


Sonya Jaquez Lewis has lived in Boulder County for over twenty years. She represents HD12 including, Lafayette, Louisville and eastern Longmont.

She is Vice-Chair of the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee and also sits on the Public Health Care and Human Services Committee.

She is part of the “Hispano”, Hispanic families from the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado whose roots in our state go back hundreds of years.

Rep. Lewis and her wife,  Allison are health care professionals and have farmed and ranched in eastern Boulder county for 15 years.

Rep. Lewis graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy and also has an Masters in Business Administration.

She is a licensed pharmacist and has been a small business owner. She is also the former Medicaid Pharmacy Director for Colorado Access. While there, she worked on programs which greatly benefitted Colorado working families and children. She helped to establish the Colorado Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) which has given tens of thousands of children access to healthcare providers, prescription drugs, vaccines, and mental health treatment.

In addition to her career in healthcare, she also have served in leadership positions on numerous nonprofits and volunteer organizations. Sonya is a very involved environmentalist serving on the Boulder County Board of Health for 7 years and the BoCo Resource Conservation Board.

As Oil and Gas impacted Coloradans, she and her wife helped organize neighborhood groups to keep fracking away from homes, schools and workplaces.

 She is the former president of Boulder Pride, now Out Boulder, and has been a lifelong LGBT activist. While a crisis page volunteer, she served 24 hour shifts for the Colorado Anti Violence Project. Sonya is very proud to be the first Latina and the first LGBTQ person ever elected to the Colorado General Assembly from Boulder County. She is the first Pharmacist ever elected the Colorado General Assembly.
