Michaelson Jenet Youth Suicide Prevention Bill Advances

(March 13) – Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet’s bill to address youth suicide passed the House Public Health & Human Services Committee tonight.

HB18-1177, sponsored by Rep. Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City, enlists nonprofit groups in a training program and a statewide awareness campaign on youth suicide prevention. It also reduces, from 15 to 12, the age at which a youth can seek outpatient psychotherapy services from a licensed mental health professional without the consent of the youth’s parent or guardian.

“He who saves one life, it is as if he has saved an entire world,” Rep. Michaelson Jenet told the committee, quoting from the Talmud. “That’s what we’re trying to do here.”

Colorado is No. 3 for suicides among youth aged 10-14 and No. 5 for teen suicide overall.

On a vote of 7-4, HB18-1177 moves on to the Appropriations Committee.
