Speaker Duran’s Statement on Anniversary of Trump’s Decision to End DACA

17,000 Dreamers Contribute More Than $800 Million To Colorado’s Economy

(Sept. 5) – Speaker Crisanta Duran issued the following statement recognizing the one-year anniversary of the Trump Administration’s politically motivated decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“One year ago, President Trump created chaos when he folded to his extreme political base and announced that he was ending DACA. Tearing families apart is not the Colorado way. Punishing people who have done nothing wrong is not who we are as a community or as a country.

“17,000 Colorado Dreamers are living in fear that they will be ripped away from their families. Dreamers are Americans in every sense but their documentation. They are students, workers, friends and neighbors. This issue impacts all Coloradans and it’s on us to fight for their futures.

“I call on Congress once again to stand on the right side of history and to create a viable pathway to citizenship for our Dreamers who were brought here as children, attended school and built their lives here.”

The Trump administration’s decision to end DACA put the lives of over 800,000 young people in legal jeopardy.

Speaker Duran denounced the Trump administration’s decision last year. Duran is one of the authors of the ASSET bill passed by the legislature in 2013. This law makes the in-state tuition rate at state colleges and universities in Colorado available to all students, regardless of immigration status, who graduate from high school in Colorado after attending for at least three years.

In January, the House passed a resolution regarding the DREAM Act in recognition of the urgent and immediate need for Congress to pass a permanent legislative solution that supports policies and an immigration system that will positively impact Dreamers.
