Alec Garnett

Speaker of the House

Alec Garnett is the Speaker of the House of Representatives representing House District 2, central Denver. As Speaker, Garnett has the No. 1 spot in the 65 member legislature.

Speaker Garnett’s constituents are statistically the youngest in the state and he works hard to be their voice in the Capitol. Affordable housing is a major issue in his district, so he spearheaded a major achievement in 2017 that resolved years of controversy over Colorado’s construction defects law. The law preserves homeowners’ right to seek redress in court and protect the biggest investment that most families will ever make, their home.

Speaker Garnett is a strong advocate for quality education. He has sponsored bills that provide tax benefits to employers who contribute to CollegeInvest accounts, expanded career pathway programs, and sought to provide scholarships to Coloradans seeking certification in early childhood education.

Speaker Garnett is a champion of common-sense gun violence prevention laws. In 2019, Speaker Garnett and Rep. Tom Sullivan co-sponsored a bill in which family members and law enforcement can petition a judge to temporarily remove firearms from persons deemed too dangerous to themselves and others. These Extreme Risk Protection Orders have allowed for the de-escalation of violent circumstances and saved lives across the state.

Speaker Garnett is a fourth-generation Coloradan who grew up in Boulder. He has a bachelor’s degree from the College of Wooster in Ohio and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado, Denver. Before being elected to the legislature in 2014, he worked for Congressman Ed Perlmutter and was executive director of the Colorado Democratic Party.

Speaker Garnett and his wife, Emily, live in the Capitol Hill neighborhood with their young son, Ashton and baby girl, Adella. On the weekends, they love to walk their bulldog, Cleopatra, and watch the Broncos.
