Fight to Save Civil Rights Division Continues

(March 13) – The House Judiciary Committee passed a bill today led by Speaker Crisanta Duran and Rep. Leslie Herod to save the Colorado Civil Rights Division and Commission. Today’s action takes place against the backdrop of a Republican effort to defund the CCRD through the budget-making process. Currently the CCRD will run out of money on June 30

“It is more important now than ever that we stand strong with our fellow Coloradans who are depending on us to continue to make civil rights a priority,” said Speaker Duran, D-Denver. “Reauthorizing the Civil Rights Division and Commission is about ensuring that our state supports a fair playing field for everyone regardless of where they’re from, whom they love or the family they were born into. The people of Colorado are depending on us to do the right thing.”

“Discrimination happens in Colorado every single day. The Civil Rights Division provides an opportunity for Coloradans to defend their rights and pursue a remedy when discrimination occurs,” said Rep. Herod, D-Denver. “The CCRD is an essential tool for Colorado’s business community and workers.”

The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill on a bipartisan vote of 10-1.

HB18-1256 now goes to the Appropriations committee.
