Unanimous Approval for Bridges’ Free Speech Bill

(March 21) – Rep. Jeff Bridges’ bill to expand students’ free speech rights on college campuses earned final approval from the House with a 64-0 vote this morning.

“This bill protects and expands the free speech rights of students on Colorado college campuses,” said Rep. Bridges, D-Greenwood Village. “The free exchange of ideas and speech in all its forms on college campuses is key to the learning experience for all students. This is the definition of a Colorado value—with support from the left, the right and the center.”

SB17-062 prohibits Colorado institutions of higher education from restricting free speech to designated “free speech zones.” The bill also prohibits restricting a student’s expression based on the content of the expression or the opposition to the expression by observers.

The bill now heads back to the Senate for consideration of an amendment made on the House floor during second reading.
