House Democrats Elect Javier Mabrey as Majority Leader, Jenny Willford as Assistant Majority Leader

DENVER, CO – House Democrats today elected their leadership team for the 76th General Assembly. After electing Representative Jennifer Bacon as the Speaker-designate, the caucus chose Representative Javier Mabrey as the next Majority Leader and Representative Jenny Willford as the next Assistant Majority Leader. The incoming leadership team is entirely comprised of women, people of color and LGBTQ+ caucus members.

“I am honored to take on this new role as the House Majority Leader to ensure Democratic priorities are crossing the finish line to deliver real results for hardworking Coloradans,” said House Majority Leader-elect Javier Mabrey, D-Denver. “From making life more affordable and protecting consumers to promoting economic security and access to housing, Colorado House Democrats have made strides towards addressing Coloradans’ greatest hardships. I look forward to carrying our work to put hardworking Coloradans first and continue to push back against attacks from the Trump Administration.”

“I’m deeply humbled and excited to begin serving the House Democrats in a new leadership role,” said Assistant Majority Leader-elect Jenny Willford, D-Northglenn. “With Democrats at the helm, we’ve boosted affordability, protected our environment and created nation-leading rideshare regulations that keep riders and drivers safe. Together, we are committed to tackling thorny issues and protecting Colorado against any unlawful overreach from the Trump administration, particularly when it comes to our elections. The next session is just around the corner, and our large, diverse majority will prioritize working Coloradans.”

The following members were also elected to caucus leadership positions:

  • Rep. Michael Carter, D-Aurora, Majority Co-Whip

  • Rep. Matt Martinez, D-Monte Vista, Majority Co-Whip

  • Rep. Chad Clifford, D-Centennial, Majority Caucus Co-Chair

  • Rep. Jamie Jackson, D-Aurora, Majority Caucus Co-Chair

House Democrats will have 49 members in the 76th General Assembly. This week, Democrats secured supermajorities in both the House and Senate. With historic wins, the democratic caucus in the House is the largest in 90 years. This is also one of the most diverse ever elected in Colorado, with more than two-thirds of the caucus women.

Majority Leader-elect Mabrey represents House District 1 in Denver’s southwestern neighborhoods and was first elected in 2022. He serves as the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and Committee on Legal Services and is a member of the House Business Affairs & Labor Committee. Majority Leader-elect Mabrey has been a fierce advocate for working people at the Capitol and has passed landmark laws to save Coloradans money on life-saving healthcare, improve protections for renters and protect Coloradans’ rights.

Assistant Majority Leader-elect Willford was elected in 2022 to represent Northglenn and Thornton at the Colorado Capitol. She is the Chair of the House State, Civic, Military & Veterans Affairs Committee and also serves on the House Energy & Environment and Legislative Audit committees. Assistant Majority Leader-elect Willford created the Family Affordability Tax Credit in 2024, which has pulled nearly 23,000 children out of poverty in its first year of implementation alone. She has also established new safety requirements for rideshare companies to improve protections for riders and drivers, safeguard our elections and democracy and keep our air clean.
